Christmas Patterns for Stained Glass — Red Cardinal, Two Designs in One File
This download contains two separate Christmas stained glass designs built around a red cardinal, at different sizes and levels of detail. The larger corner design has the bird perched and is the piece most people want; the smaller one is a simpler companion you can finish in an evening. They are supplied together so you can match them in a window, hang one now and save the other, or give one away. Download instantly and trace from the printed sheet, or cut the vector file on a plotter or laser cutter.
Design 1 — cardinal corner design
- Height: 8.66″ (220 mm)
- Width: 7.76″ (197 mm)
- Glass: 47 pieces
This is the more involved of the two, drawn as an L-shaped corner panel so it sits into a window frame. Forty-seven pieces is a comfortable weekend project for someone who has cut glass before, and the corner shape means fewer long straight cuts — convenient if you are working on a small cutting board.
Design 2 — the simple companion
- Height: 5.3″ (134 mm)
- Width: 7.0″ (180 mm)
- Glass: 21 pieces
Twenty-one pieces and a wide, low format: this is the beginner-friendly one, and it suits a small window, a cabinet door, or a gift someone is starting out with. If you cut the larger cardinal first, this one takes an evening afterwards.

Where it works
A dining room or kitchen window for the corner design, a hallway or porch for the smaller one. Red reads strongly against daylight, which makes these effective from outside as well as in — a good thing if the window faces a street. They also suit a Christmas display where you want two related pieces rather than one large one.
Licence
A personal and commercial licence covers both designs. Make them for yourself, make them as gifts, or cut and sell the finished panels — no additional fees.
Printing and finishing
Print the PDF at 100% scale on US Letter or A4 and measure both designs before cutting. Trace your colours carefully on the cardinal designs — the red is the focal point and the surrounding pieces are keyed to it. With the corner design, assemble the two straight runs first so the mitres stay square, then fill in the bird.
A note before you start
You are buying the patterns only. Glass, came, solder, any backing, and any finished panel are not included. The photographs show the designs completed by other makers with their own materials.
