The plague doctor: a long beak, a wide-brimmed hat filled with herbs, and a heavy cloak. It is one of the most recognisable Halloween silhouettes there is, and it works in stained glass precisely because the shape is doing all the work — you can read it from across a room without any facial detail at all.

The design stands 15.75″ tall (400 mm) and is built from 33 pieces of glass. Plan for roughly 293 inches (7.4 metres) of foil on the lead lines. The pattern is marked as a simple difficulty design, which is worth taking at face value: at 33 pieces the glass work is not the challenge. The height is — at 400 mm you are working on a panel taller than your cutting mat is wide, so plan where you cut before you start.

Where it works

A tall window, a porch, or the wall beside a door — at 400 mm it wants vertical space rather than a gap to fill. Backlight is close to essential here. The design is mostly dark cloak and hat, and without light behind it the whole thing reads as a black shape; with light through it, the herb-filled beak and the hat brim separate properly and the silhouette becomes clear.

Printing and finishing

Print the PDF at 100% scale — at 400 mm tall you will need to print across two sheets and tape them, and check the overlap against a printed measurement line before you commit to a size. Build the cloak and hat as separate sections and solder them together from the bottom up: on a piece this tall, trying to solder the whole thing flat will warp it before you can correct it.
